Chronological Sentence for 30 December 2008

And some among the Gods and Goddesses came to care more about power than about the developing Universe over which they had been given stewardship.

Personally I'm a bit discouraged on the whole affiliate marketing thing right now so I haven't been using traffic exchanges. They aren't good for promoting things like fiction, although I will probably come back to using them for promoting the activist stuff.

A Necessary Sacrifice

Two things prompted a decision that's been needing to come for a while. The first and more constructive one is advice that one person was giving another, but it actually had "me" written all over it. The advice was

"you should take a look at the absurd list of tasks you have created for yourself."

I did, and my list is indeed absurd. People with bipolar disorder have a tendency to do this kind of thing to themselves. We throw ourselves headlong into anything that seems like a good idea at the time without really thinking it through and then hate ourselves for failing.

My list includes working on my second book, tending to an official website and blogs and such to promote the first book, being the administrator for a new social network and Twitter-style microblog service for creative, esoteric, open-minded types, working a full time job, and going to school part time. The affiliate marketing was supposed to be a way to make extra money and for a while it was kind of fun even though the extra dough did not exactly roll in, but it's been more burden than fun for several months now.

The second factor that pushed the decision was actually a comment made by an anonymous LOSER on the Kill My Job blog at http://twitpwr.com/affiliate about how much my blog sucks. I happen to know this individual is a loser because of their cowardly hit-and-run anonymous comment and the fact that if they weren't a loser, they'd be too busy with their own life to be leaving cowardly hit and run comments. My response was admissibly juvenile as hell, and yet I must say, funny. It began with "By Satan's balls." Nuff said.

Not that I am kowtowing to anonymous Loser. Frankly, I could give a rat's butt if people think KMJ or any of my blogs/websites/projects suck. But the fact is, I don't have time to work on that blog. I'll continue to keep it as a repository for certain of my utters, but I'm not going to devote any time to it beyond that at this point. As of today, it is officially retired or on permanent vacation.

I will continue to promote certain of the affiliate products I discovered that I really like, such as the Ultimate Recipe Collection (http://TwitPWR.com/…aterecipe/) through utters and Twitter, but am no longer going to make a concerted effort in the affiliate marketing field. What I've been doing is more than a touch too much. I need to concentrate on my literary and activist efforts, spreading the word about religious tolerance and better mental health care worldwide.

So if there's a lesson that I'd like to impart from this it's the old "to thine own self be true." If you're doing too many things, evaluate what really has meaning for you and then throw yourself into that wholeheartedly.

Thanks for "listening." Peace to you.

Promotional and Online Friend Tools

The microblogs Twitter and Utterli are not only tools for keeping in touch with online friends, they are promotional tools. Some of you may already be using these.
For those who are new to microblogging or who haven't heard of the less well-known Utterli, you can post short messages, including links using these services. The easiest way is to sign up for both and then post your messages in Utterli and have it cross-post to Twitter so you don't have to type the same thing twice, as Utterli has this ability. You can also cross-post to Blogger, Flickr, You Tube, and I believe Word Pad or Type Pad and Live Journal, and you can link Utterli to your Facebook profile.
If you are a writer or performance artist or market any kind of product or service, we can help each other by following each other on Twitter and Utterli as well. Or we can just have fun. I use my pen name (Lily Strange) rather than my affiliate marketing name (Jobkiller) as I initially started using these services to promote my book. I'm good with having a ton of blogs but having a ton of microblog profiles too would only drive me over the edge of insanity for certain!
For artistic types (artists, writers, musicians) there is also Humble Voice. I almost gave up on it at first--the platform isn't the easiest to use. But once I got the hang of it, I liked it. I've posted several poems and paragraphs to my albums. I have not, however, figured out how to change my profile. I've been getting spams to my inbox from girls looking for a sugar daddy! If that's your kind of thing, you may be rushing to sign up for Humble Voice toot sweet just for that! But considering that I'm straight and have neither the means nor the desire to be a sugar mama anyway, I just think it's funny.
My Facebook profile is http://www.facebook.com/people/Lily-Strange/1653291128
You freaks might also want to join Vampire Freaks. Not just for vampire fans, also a good place for bands, artists and writers to promote themselves.
And don't forget about my place for those "of a mind" or at least of an open mind when it comes to the paranormal. Come...be among your own kind. Leave the pig faced people to their pig faced world. Being a freak is beautiful!
My Twitter profile is http://twitter.com/lilystrange and my Utterli profile is http://www.utterli.com/lilystrange
If you'd like to follow each other on these services, go ahead and leave a comment with your Twitter and Utterli profile links and I'll follow you!

Outskirts Press Plug

As the first draft of the second book nears completion (well, sort of) I have again signed on with Outskirts Press for the publication of the second book, which will probably be released in 2010.
Many different packages are available and they publish almost everything, except for porn and hate literature. If you have something in the works, you might want to check them out for yourself.
There are companies out there who allow you to publish your book "free," but you will still have to pay for printing, storage and promotion. In the long run, I find that I'd pay about as much anyway and having a reliable publisher is worthwhile to me.

A Double Blast

Life has been pretty serious of late with my father's health problems. He is currently in the hospital with intense unexplained pain in the left thigh. His kidneys are bad and there's a distinct possibility that he may have suffered another small stroke. With this going on I wasn't feeling much like laughing until I found a miracle. That miracle's name is Mr. Methane. If you want to rip away your troubles, toot on over to his site now and let him cut through the funk surrounding your life.
Through Mr. Methane's MySpace page, I also discovered the bowels of evil in Bann Drite. My keyboard won't allow me to type that a with the little circle over the top. I hope they don't invoke their dark and flatulent gods of doom to blast me into oblivion for this blasphemy.
Bann Drite will blow away your illusions of a fresh and pure world with their ripping brand of "Evil evil nordic black metal- with a twist of fart." Your sanity will be cut away in a nuclear blast of methane death. It is like nothing you have ever imagined--or smelled. Try listening while reading your daily dose of The Poop Report. And even the crappiest day will have blissful relief--just like letting loose a really big fart after holding it in for a long time.

Inspirations For Life

As the title states, this is a blog of inspirational stories and thoughts. I was drawn to the essay on overcoming fear as I have been having dreadful panic attacks lately. But there are also essays on other things, such as marriage, even on terminal illness. The tone is positive but not sappy or preachy. Thankfully, because in my case, neither of those approaches has ever inspired anything but anger or a desire to run away.

The Chaos of Death

This fascinating, macabre young blog explores the rituals and beliefs surrounding death and burial in various cultures. The writing is intelligent and scholarly, and that certain subject that we all must face, try though we may to avoid it, is handled with dignity and grace, touching on the poigniant, terrifying, and sometimes beautiful phenomenon that is death. The posts concerning the deaths of children in the 19th and early 20th century are both informative and evocative. It may seem morbid to modern folk to take a photograph of a dead child, but in those times, that was often the only photograph the family had.
One of my great aunts died at a very young age. My grandmother ended up with the photo and it was discovered after her death in 1992. I thought it was a child sleeping in a bassinet until my mother told me what it really was. Although I am a fan of horror fiction and write it myself, I must confess that I was shocked. My initial reaction was to drop the picture. At this point I wish that I had kept it. Such a thing is of important historical value for a family.

Ginny's Needlecrafts

One of the more scary things about me may be my completely non-scary and normal interests. Most of which I really suck at. However, if you're at all arts-and-crafts inclined or know someone who is, you will surely want to visit Ginny's Needlecrafts. She has an online store so many beautiful cross-stitching patterns to choose from and many, many materials. And visiting her blog is just somehow soothing and meditative. The harried one likes!
I really wish I was at all talented in this area, but unfortunately, I'm a complete buffoon. I can't even use a sewing machine. I'd like to try one of these projects but I'm afraid I'd botch it completely. Maybe when I'm finally retired and have time to relax a little. Which will probably be two days before I die at the age of 110, the way things are going.

Lobster Boy

If you have ever waited tables, you will appreciate Lobster Boy's blog. He has worked at Red Lobster for 10 years. As far as I can tell, he has never ripped out anyone's throat with a lobster claw, although the thought has probably crossed his mind. A good educational primer for anyone about to go to a restaurant. Before I became a slave at the Gerri Atrik Retirement Community, I was a server and bartender, so I know how it is. Actually in spite of all the crap I sometimes wish I hadn't left. It actually wasn't the customers, who, believe me, gave me reason to bitch. It was the politics. Now I work nights so I'm never right in the middle of the fray. However, I do miss knowing that I'll at least have enough money to put in the gas tank at the end of a shift!
Remember, folks, your server is not a slave. But they do get slave wages. The gold standard in my neck of the woods is $2.13 an hour. So don't be a cheapskate--tip righteously! 20-25% is good these days. A 10% tip is CHEAP! Hollywood reporter Mike Evans loves ratting out the bad tippers in Tacky-Town. Some of them, with their millions, tip less than 10%. Shame!
So when at your local Red Lobster, (or anywhere else) tip well. Because you never know--Lobster Boy may be your server. I said he hasn't ripped out anyone's throat with a lobster claw YET! You don't want to be the first!

Terry's Timeout

Terry's blog always has nice pictures. And gets more comments than I get on all of my damn blogs combined, so I'm jealous. I'm beginning to think that for me the blogging idea is a stupid one because it mostly makes me feel bad. I think I have lots of interesting things to say but apparently nobody else does. The fact that I just had another birthday isn't doing anything to contribute to a positive mood either.
This meme came from Terry's blog so I stole it.

1. By what nickname(s) were you known as a child?
Butterfly. Because I loved butterflies. I think I should have been known as "pupa" because I never emerged from my cocoon.

2. Do you have a favorite poem and, if so, what is it? Recite it (or a snippet) here, please.

Alone
by Edgar Allan Poe

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

3. What is your greatest regret in life, something that you failed to do that you wish you did?

I regret a lot of things. I guess one thing I regret is not having tried to get more things published sooner. I had some stupid idea that I was going to be an actress so I didn't concentrate on my writing. Also I regret gaining as much weight as I have. It's a lot harder to take it off when things have gone this far.

4. You are tired and hungry, but it's too late to cook. If any snack food were available to you, what would you choose and why?

The jerky that I am involved with selling. It's actually reasonably healthy. My favorites are the sweet and spicy beef and the hot and spicy Buffal-o's.

5. What is the oldest item of clothing (not jewelry!) that you wear regularly and what do you love about it?

Most of the clothing I own is old and crappy. As long as it's comfortable and doesn't have too many holes, I don't care, I keep wearing it. I refuse to wear uncomfortable clothes.

The Village Tales of Fekenham Swarberry

Do you like things that are bawdy, naughty, libelous and licentious? Then you must read The Village Tales of Fekenham Swarberry. To quote the creator, Cocaine Jesus, it is "A weekly vignette of a parallel universe England where ale is pulled from barrels and leather balls smack resoundingly against willow bats and the local vicar smokes weed and the publican consorts with loose women." If that sounds like your sort of thing, then you're probably the kind of person I'd show my hidden goodies to!

Got Jerky?

This isn't a creative website but I do have to sing it's praises. Unless you're a vegetarian, you'll love it. Are you ready? It's the only healthy jerky I've found that contains no added MSG and no carcinogenic preservatives such as nitrates. And you don't have to have iron teeth to chew it, like most jerkies. It's very palatable.
The bag of teriyaki turkey jerky I'm currently enjoying (and which is almost gone) contains turkey (duh) sugar, water, soy sauce, pineapple juice concentrate, apple cider vinegar, salt, spices, paprika, natural smoke flavorings and caramel color. The pineapple juice contains papain, which is what makes the meat tender. Because it has no preservatives, the note on the bag advises eating within three days of opening. No problem, trust me!
One bag contains four servings and one serving is just 60 calories. It's very low in fat--just 5 out of 60 calories are from fat content. There are 11 grams of protein and only 5 grams of sugars.
If I sound like an advertisement, believe me that this is not a paid testimonial. My son and I eat this stuff whenever we can get it. We get it autoshipped once a month at $6.50 per bag. That's a little more than what you pay for the stuff in the store, but when you take into account that the price includes shipping, it's really about the same. And the tough, MSG-laden, nitrate-preserved stuff in the store doesn't hold a candle to this tender, preservative-free treat.
We currently order four bags a month but trust me, this is nowhere near enough. I think I'll have the number increased to six. Hell, if I wasn't so broke, I'd get me a case every month! That might come close to doing the job.
By now, if you're a fan of jerky, you're drooling on yourself and vowing to find me and open a can of whoop ass on me if I don't tell you where my secret supply comes from. Well, your wait is over! Just click this link and you're on your way to healthy, tasty snacking. You can become a distributor too if you want--the only charge is agreeing to a 2-bag autoship every month. But you were going to do that anyway, right? Or you can just order products.
My cat is always after my jerky. She'd eat the whole bag if I let her! Normally I'm very generous with my pets. But in this case she gets just a little--after all, she's a little cat! :-p And I'm a big old hoss. Now tell me--who needs the jerky more??

The Anomalist

The Anomalist website is a fabulous find. Describing their site as "A DAILY REVIEW OF WORLD NEWS ON MAVERICK SCIENCE, UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES, UNORTHODOX THEORIES, STRANGE TALENTS, AND UNEXPECTED DISCOVERIES," they provide books and articles postulating theories about various phenomena including UFO's, ESP, the afterlife, and other controversial scientific postulations. Whether you are a believer or just curious, you're sure to find something to make even the most hardened skeptic wonder if there isn't more to our universe than just those things that standard science accepts. The site is well constructed. You will enjoy spending time browsing their myriad of entries.
If you have reason to communicate with the staff of the Anomalist, you will find that you are dealing with professional, courteous people. This is always a commendable trait. I have been searching for magazines and e-zines where I could either have my book featured or advertise it, and they were the only ones that replied to me promptly, if at all. This, however, is not why I give the site itself a rave review. Whether or not I had occasion to contact the staff of the Anomalist, the site is still an excellent one. If you are the sort of person who enjoys thinking outside the narrow confies of accepted scientific theory, you will enjoy what The Anomalist has to offer.

The Woodring Monitor

Feast your eyes on Jim Woodring's incredible talent. This gifted artist often invokes a style reminiscent of those surreal early 20th century cartoons that inspired the revolutionary underground comix of the 1960's and 1970's. Words can't describe Woodring's amazing creativity. You have to see it for yourself.

For A Good Time...

The Avitable Blog is weird, wild fun! There are pictures. There is lots and lots of writing. There's humor. There are memes. The creator seems at once normal and eccentric. Is he a weird normal or a normal weirdo? I don't know, but if you need some non-icky-sticky cheering up with no phoney baloney (or, as my dear old pa says, Phonus Ballonus) and no happy-crappy, then get thee hence to the Avitable Blog. It cannot be described in words--it must be seen to be believed.
